Consequence is heading where no publication has gone before… the final frontier. Today, we’re presenting our ranking of the 30 best space albums of all time, from heavy intergalactic concept albums to funky explorations of the stars and beyond. See the full list below, and check out our ranking of the best space movies and space television shows

Even before the human race began shooting folks above the stratosphere in metallic, slightly phallic metal tubes, space and all of its unknown wonders, horrors, and possibilities served as inspiration for artists across basically every medium. In the decades since we took one small step, that obsession has only grown stronger, resulting in an ever-growing canon of interstellar media.

While film tends to dominate the space (ha!) thanks to the visual spectacle and narrative intrigue inherent to extraterrestrial exploration, musicians from various genres have also channeled what lies beyond the stars to create some of our favorite tunes. From classic cuts like “Space Oddity” to subgenres like space rock to individual bands that hail from distant planets (GWAR, you scumdogs, we’re looking at you), the silence of space ironically has a pretty kick-ass soundtrack.

So, we’ve decided to undertake a challenge that’s just as complicated and historic as any given Apollo mission — ranking the best space albums of all time.

Of course, the definition of “space album” is a loose one. Some LPs try to match space’s grandiosity (like Sun Ra or Hawkwind), some take a more literal approach to the would-be sounds of the vacuum (like Brian Eno or clipping.), and others craft sci-fi narratives that play out over the course of a tracklist (like David Bowie or Deltron 3030). For the purposes of today, we’re looking at albums that at least have some explicit space themes and intergalactic timbres, ultimately organizing them accordingly based on the quality of the record and their commitment to the cosmos.

Strap in and prepare for launch — the full list of the 30 best space albums of all time is below. Then, revisit our rankings of the best space films and best space TV series.
