It’s “Space Week” at Consequence, where we are counting down the best space movies, space television shows, and space albums of all time, so who better to contribute than our favorite intergalactic barbarian, Blöthar the Berserker of GWAR.
After we made contact with Blöthar, he was gracious enough to transmit a video of himself naming his favorite movies about space. Of course, Blöthar is a nonconformist, and thus his list of favorite space movies is quite unique, if not a bit questionable.
In the video above, Blöthar names Plan 9 From Outer Space, Ed Wood’s infamous 1957 movie that is considered by many to be the worst film of all time, regardless of genre. “I love it,” enthuses the GWAR front-thing. “The dialog is terrible, very questionable acting. … There’s pie tins just flying around and all kinds of terrible effects. I love it. My favorite movie, and it inspired the aesthetic of GWAR, definitely.”
Elsewhere on his list, Blöthar mentions 1964’s Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and 1987’s Spaceballs, the latter of which actually made Consequence‘s list of the 30 Best Space Movies of All Time.
He also throws in an adult joke about Pacific Rim — not technically a space movie, but worth checking out the video above for his punchline.
After you get done watching Blöthar’s favorite space movies, you can catch GWAR on their spring US tour featuring support by Soulfly and King Parrot. The outing kicks off March 19th in Richmond, Virginia, and runs through an April 29th show in Charlotte, North Carolina, with tickets available via Ticketmaster or StubHub,
