The hype around the project has been relatively subdued, thanks in part to the constantly shifting release date, and the confounding bubble Ye has formed around himself. According to early, unofficial chart metrics provided by Chart Data, Bully was streamed 33.2 million times on Spotify on its partial first day. Per Ye’s distribution company Gamma, “Bully did close to 50 million in its first full day at Spotify,” marking the biggest streaming day of any rapper of 2026 so far. Even with Gamma’s amendment, the new album didn’t crack the same status when compared to Ye’s previous releases. VULTURES 1 was streamed 56.6 million times on its first day of release in February 2024. DONDA, released in 2021, received close to 100 million streams, which was double the numbers of Bully, illustrating the power Ye once held.

Bully itself sounds like a typical Kanye West album, with theatrical soundscapes powered by chipmunk soul, and self-exculpatory lyrics that make you wonder where he is in life at this moment. “We don’t have to worry,” he sings on “ALL THE LOVE.” “And we don’t have to hold on/ To pain we left behind/ Wounds get healed with time.”

Ye initially addressed the “pain” and “wounds” he has contributed to, and experienced, via an apology ad he ran in The Wall Street Journal in January. In the ad, Ye specifically highlighted a four month-long bipolar manic episode he suffered in 2025.

“I lost touch with reality,” he wrote. “Things got worse the longer I ignored the problem.” In addition to apologizing for his actions, Ye shined a bright light on bipolar disorder, specifically type 1, which he attributes as the cause of his erratic behavior and offensive remarks. In light of his conveniently-timed renewed remorse, the same questions that have followed Kanye West for years have re-surfaced: Was the apology sincere? Or was it strategic?

Even among mental health experts, the answer isn’t obvious. “When I read it, I honestly felt sad about it,” says Dr. Bianca Jones, a Houston-based licensed psychologist who’s board certified in serious mental illness psychology. “It seemed sincere. It really spoke to what I see talking to people every day who have this condition and deal with bipolar disorder, [which] is that it can be so disruptive to their lives. I think that people can be really quick to dismiss the actions that occur when someone is having an episode as their true selves or how they really feel. But insight can be so limited during those times that the person is just not thinking or acting like their usual selves. And that typically is one of the core ways that we define bipolar disorder is the episodes take you so far away from who you typically are. I felt that he was really vulnerable in that apology.”

Others aren’t so convinced. Rebecca Blanton is a freelance writer and educator based in California, with a PhD in political psychology and a B.A. in psychology. They also live with bipolar type 1. “Bipolar doesn’t make you racist,” Blanton clarifies. “For me, it was kind of a cop out. We’ve seen this more and more, along with the stuff around the BAFTA outbursts of the guy with Tourette’s blaming bad behavior that is somewhat rooted in your psychological distress disorders, but trying to write away the harm that it’s done. That’s kind of what I saw the ad as… I didn’t see it as taking responsibility for the harm it’s caused to others.”

When it comes to how the public has chosen to engage with Ye’s behavior, including the ad, the chasm between empathy and skepticism is growing ever-wider. As some experts explain, the bigger issue may be our collective inability to be present for those with severe mental health conditions — especially those in the limelight. “Everything that you say and do in that high-profile type of setting, I don’t think we’re ever gonna be able to dissect if that’s just a natural consequence of being in the public eye so heavily, especially him,” Illinois-based Licensed Clinical Social Worker and mental health therapist Sara Macke maintains. “Who knows how long mental illness has been a factor? Who knows what his beliefs are versus what he’s utilizing at that moment for some type of publicity? I think it’s hard to separate all of those.”

Dr. Shay Thomas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Atlanta, has a practice that is partially dedicated to serving sports and entertainment families. According to Dr. Thomas, when someone lives in the public eye, there’s already a public perception of their personality. “They sometimes are literally encouraged to take on a certain persona to get the hits, to get the likes, to make the buzz,” Dr. Thomas offers. “There’s an uncommon, unfortunate phrase: Sometimes bad press is better than none at all. Anything to kind of make a buzz. And so that begs the question: Is this the reality of the person behind closed doors, or is this a part of the persona that they need to portray because this is their livelihood?”

Ye used the apology ad to point to his famous 2002 car crash as the alleged cause of his neurological issues, a claim that many saw through a cynical lens. “Twenty-five years ago, I was in a car accident that broke my jaw and caused injury to the right frontal lobe of my brain,” Ye wrote, referencing the collision that left his jaw wired shut, as heard on his debut solo single, “Through the Wire.” “At the time, the focus was on the visible damage — the fracture, the swelling, and the immediate physical trauma. The deeper injury, the one inside my skull, went unnoticed.”

Dr. Thomas previously worked in a rehabilitation facility with patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). She says “the symptoms overlap” between the physical condition and mental health diagnoses like bipolar disorder. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, common behavioral symptoms of brain injury include depression, anxiety, reduced initiation, mood swings, and agitation — nearly all textbook symptoms of bipolar disorder.

When I ask if TBIs can complicate or intensify the course of bipolar 1, Dr. Thomas says she believes it’s possible. “Because you’re not only dealing with the mood dysregulation, you’re dealing with the neurology and the trauma of the brain, literally a TBI — traumatic brain injury,” Dr. Thomas explains. “And so there’s trauma in your brain on top of the emotional and psychological aspects of the mood dysregulation.”

The experts I spoke with addressed mania clinically. With Dr. Thomas, I wanted to talk about what it actually feels like. In my open letter response to Ye’s apology ad, I shared that my own bipolar type 1 manic episodes tend to center on an unsubstantiated dislike of certain racial groups. “I tend to become hyper-vitriolic toward non-Black people, but most especially white people,” I wrote. “I scream about reparations; I cry about slavery; I talk to my ancestors. It’s an experience I’m still trying to parse through myself, but what I can say is I understand feeling like you would never be hateful towards a group of people, and then uncharacteristically expressing disdain for said group. I don’t think anyone wants to openly admit to that, but it is a reality in mental illness.”

Dr. Shay Thomas has come across similar cases in her expertise, and says mental health episodes can “sometimes” be “very much connected to trauma.” “From the standpoint of generational trauma, there’s a whole research on epigenetics and just the lived experience that’s passed down through generations,” Dr. Thomas observes. “And then there’s also the reference to in your body… So I believe that yes, it can manifest through your thought process, through your behaviors, through your expectations, through your relationships, through your sense of self, what you think is appropriate and what’s not. The stories you’ve heard, they could be kind of verbally and auditorily passed down.”

“But unfortunately,” Dr. Thomas continues, “We live in a world where we talk about slavery and segregation and things of that nature. We live in a world where we’re in 2026 and some of the remnants of that, some of the manifestation of that, is still going on. Sometimes we’re talking about present-day things that stemmed from generational trauma from decades ago, from centuries ago, that has not been resolved or reconciled. So that lives and breathes within us and between us.”

I ask Rebecca Blanton if they have heard of similar cases as mine or Ye’s, or if they have experienced anything comparable as someone who lives with bipolar type 1. Blanton did their doctoral thesis on multiculturalism and how it shapes civic identity, which required a deep dive into American political history, something Blanton describes as “a hot mess.” “So [my episodes] would come with the guilt around that, of knowing what my ancestors did,” they say. “I know my family history — my personal family history. We were on the wrong side of a lot of wars. It’s like, ‘Can’t you see the damage we did?'”

On the subject of pre-existing attitudes, Dr. Bianca Jones says that mania is more likely to alter them, not amplify what’s lying beneath the surface. “Like Ye’s situation in particular, [with] psychotic symptoms that go along with it, you’re losing touch with what’s real,” Dr. Jones insists. “Not necessarily amplifying beliefs that are already there. And I also think that you can be susceptible and vulnerable to taking in new information, but not perceiving it in the right way… I don’t know that this is something that he believed outside of these symptoms. But I think that we are also in a climate where a lot of negative things are being said about people who are in certain groups. So maybe having access to some of that information, whatever social media algorithms, whatever’s popping up, may have made Ye more susceptible.”

Accountability is a buzzword in mental health conversations, and everyone I spoke with for this story emphasized that it’s not a simple concept. “I’ve done shitty things when I’ve been manic,” Rebecca Blanton reveals. “And I would say it was definitely amplified and I made the decision to do those things when I was manic because I was manic. But it’s not like the seeds of the ideas didn’t exist before. There was something there and then mania just allowed it to flourish.”

Dr. Shay Thomas emphasizes that accountability isn’t just about the public-facing element; it’s also about what happens behind closed doors. “What is in your heart?” Dr. Thomas questions. “I tell my clients this when we’re talking about infidelity. Just because someone apologized and says that they’re accountable for their actions or they’re working towards that, forgiveness is not automatic, and reconciliation is not always automatic. Those are two distinct processes… Boundaries need to be set. Consequences need to take place.”

We’ve been put in a fraught position as an audience: We’re close enough to witness everything Ye’s doing, but much too far to truly understand it. Dr. Bianca Jones says that holding space for conflicting emotions is key in processing Ye’s apology. “Two things can be true,” she offers. “You can be hurt, and you can also recognize that the person is not themselves.”

From a mental health professional’s stance, Dr. Jones urges society to think of Ye as we would a family member who’s been diagnosed with an ailment. “Thinking about people who have struggled with alcohol abuse, right?” she observes. “In the Black community, that saying, ‘There’s always one.’ But they are always welcome back into the home. They’re always welcome back at the family reunion. Why can’t we do the same for Kanye?”

Bully suggests Ye is at least somewhat aware of how “the hero became a villain.” But awareness isn’t accountability, and accountability isn’t forgiveness. Those are three different doors, and he’s only opened one.

Mental health experts’ reaction to Ye’s apology ad underscores the unresolved tension between mental illness and accountability.

_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[654310302,494014047,654142004,654310300
494014214,24323
64613
["post-1553706","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-music-editorials","category-exclusive-interviews","category-music","category-music-features","tag-hip-hop","tag-rap","artist-kanye-west
{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"NewsArticle
“A Cop Out” or a Cry for Help?
