Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has shared a home demo of the band’s song “Ten Years Gone” on his YouTube channel.
The song originally appeared on Physical Graffiti, their sixth studio album, where it was elaborated on with a vocal line and lyric as well as an added drum part. What’s so striking is how much of the home demo, recorded by Jimmy Page alone, is how much of the song is already present, from the iconic guitar lines and solo to the bass part with its similarly iconic melodic turnaround.
Page said in the description of the video, “As a footnote to Physical Graffiti, I thought you might like to hear the original home demo, recorded in my studio at Plumpton Place of a piece of music that was going to surface as ‘Ten Years Gone.’ I presented this rough mix to the band at Headley Grange in order to do this for real. Robert Plant came up with some lyrics for my music that were extraordinary and then we arrive at the song ‘Ten Years Gone.””
The band has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Physical Graffiti since last year. This is not the only celebratory release from the act regarding the record. Last year, they released Live EP, comprised of four previously released live performances of the band of material from the record.
Two of the recordings, “In My Time of Dying” and “Trampled Underfoot,” came from the band’s legendary 1975 Earl’s Court performance. The other two, “Sick Again” and “Kashmir,” came from their performance at Knebworth in 1979.
The release of the home demo of “Ten Years Gone” follows 2024’s release of “The Seasons” by Jimmy Page, his home demo of what would eventually become “The Rain Song” from Houses of the Holy, which was then celebrating its own 50th anniversary.
