We’re back with a fresh round of Mixtapes!, the series where musicians put together a playlist on the spot prompted by our ridiculous scenarios. This time, Barry Can’t Swim picks up the bowl and puts together his personal tracklist.
Ahead of the release of his new album, Loner (out now via Ninja Tune), Barry Can’t Swim joined us on the big comfy couch at Gold-Diggers LA for the latest edition of Mixtapes!. We tasked the Scottish electronic artist with picking songs for people who don’t like dance music, waking up in strange hotel rooms, and forgetting to save your latest masterpiece. Watch him make his picks above, and listen to the full playlist below (via Spotify).
While Barry Can’t Swim’s Recent History revealed some of his current music tastes, his Mixtapes! forced him to dig even deeper into his personal preferences. That’s how he gets to Radiohead’s “Exit Music (for a Film)” (losing last night’s masterpiece because you forgot to hit save!), Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” (waking up in a hotel on tour not knowing what city you’re in), and Daft Punk’s “One More Time” (the quintessential dance music track).
Then there are even more personal choices, such as the anthem for his beloved Everton F.C., “Spirit of the Blues,” or Luke Kelly’s “Raglan Road” for when people mistake his lovely Scottish accent for Irish. When prompted to think of a tune for when the music cuts out during a DJ set, Barry Can’t Swim was able to recall a real life experience of this exact thing happening where he got the entire crowd to sing along to Bruce Channel’s classic “Hey! Baby.”
See what other tracks Barry Can’t Swim puts on his Mixtapes playlist by watching the full video interview above (or on YouTube), recorded at Los Angeles’ Gold-Diggers Sound. You can also listen to the fully Spotify playlist below. (You can listen to Barry Can’t Swim’s choice of running music, Pépé Bradock’s “Deep Burnt,” here.)
