Just a few days ago, our 2024 Film Performer of the Year Timothée Chalamet received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Fittingly, today’s re-released episode of The Opus: Blood on the Tracks podcast focuses on Dylan’s legacy in film. Listen above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Keep in mind, this archival episode from the first season of The Opus was released back in 2018, so some of the information may not be the most up-to-date. For example, A Complete Unknown wasn’t even a concept yet, and Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese was still a year away. Still, host Paula Mejía and guests film critics Monica Castillo and Jordan Hoffman had plenty of Bob Dylan movies to discuss.
The trio touch on Dylan documentaries, such as DA Pennebaker’s 1967 doc Don’t Look Back, as well as narrative films, including Todd Haynes’ 2007 fragmented biography I’m Not There. Also part of the discussion is filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s planned on-screen adaptation of Blood on the Tracks. While that movie remains unrealized six years later, a fun bit of trivia: Guadagnino directed Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name, earning the actor his first Best Actor Oscar nomination — and his only one until A Complete Unknown.
Learn about everything from the pervasive use of Bob Dylan’s music in movies to how his persona has been rendered in cinema by listening to the latest episode of The Opus: Blood on the Tracks. Stay tuned for the final episode of our special 50th anniversary re-release of this archival season, coming on Sunday, January 26th.
