Long Time No See: The Podcast is back with a pair of stand-ups you may know — and who certainly know each other — from the Los Angeles comedy scene: Leslie Liao (Netflix’s Verified Stand-Up, “Fixing Straight Men” on Don’t Tell Comedy) and Logan Guntzelman (Just for Laughs Montreal Roastmaster’s Invitational Final Four). The two have plenty more in common than just their location, and you can watch the hilarious discussion above or listen wherever you get your podcasts.
The pair immediately bond over their naturally deep voices, something they both say confused people when they were younger. “I was 16 or 17, we went to some family barbecue with family friends and I saw some lady I hadn’t seen since I was really little,” Guntzelman recalls. “And she was like, ‘Oh, it’s nice you grew into your voice, because it was really creepy when you were little…’ The last time she saw me, I was like six and I sounded the same. So I think it probably was a little like, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on over there?'”
Liao can relate, even within her own family: “My grandma would call the house — and I have an older brother who’s like eight years older than me. So I would just pick up the phone, and she’d be like, ‘Jerry, Jerry, so good to talk to you!'” Their karaoke choices reflect this reality — while other women sing Mariah Carey, Guntzelman opts for “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind and Kid Rock duets, while Liao sticks to grunge and Fiona Apple.
Both of them also openly admit to some hardcore adulting issues. Liao, for example, refuses to sit on a couch because it’s an instant sleep trap. “When I see my boyfriend lounging on the couch, I’m like, what are you doing?” she says. “Like, you’re gonna fall asleep — and we have a dog and then the dog lays on him. I’m like, ‘You’re out, you’re done for the night. We’re not having dinner. You’re not gonna ask about my day. You’re fucking done. I’ll see you tomorrow.'”
Guntzelman’s issues are more culinary in nature, as she admits she only “microwaves exclusively”: “What I like to do is I get a bag of — and this is what everyone wants to hear and edit later, clips where we give recipes that nobody wants — but I get those bags of cooked lentils or beans, like you microwave it in a little pouch. I’ll pour it in a little container. Throw some eggs in there. Microwave that for like 10 minutes. And it is kind of like a frittata, but it’s not and it’s bad. And it kind of becomes this like brick that is unpleasant, but it gets the job done.”
