Year Zero: 2001 continues with our list of the 25 Best Movies of 2001. As we continue to explore this pivotal year in pop culture, make sure to check out our list of the 50 Best Albums of 2001 and stay tuned for more musings on 25 years ago.

2001 was a roller coaster at the movies, as a national tragedy split the year into two parts: A spring and summer filled with popcorn innocence, followed by a fall where every story told took on a whole new significance, whether it be the epic fantasy of The Lord of the Rings, the surreal dreamscape of Mulholland Drive, or the slick heisting of Ocean’s Eleven.

It was also a year right at the intersection of shifting generations, with one of 20th century legend Robert Altman’s final films being recognized alongside 21st century legend Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough feature. New genres were being explored, new stars were emerging from unexpected projects, and American audiences were getting even closer to embracing international film. All while modern masters like Stevens Spielberg and Soderbergh were at the top of their game, and animation was starting to get the respect it deserves.

At the 2002 Oscars, Ron Howard’s oddly twisty and often saccharine A Beautiful Mind won for Best Picture. No offense to the Academy’s choice, but Consequence came up with some more impactful options, an eclectic mix of comedy, action, drama, horror, and more. This is a list of movies turning 25 that feature grand adventures and intimate mysteries, that satirize their time or offer haunting images of the future. Movies that still echo in us 25 years later, and will for decades still to come.
