In the world of heavy music, it’s shaping up to be a strong year for established acts who’ve been hunkered down in the studio, as a number of veteran artists occupy our list of the 10 Most Anticipated Metal and Hard Rock Albums of 2026.
Maynard James Keenan and Puscifer come to mind, having binged on goth and industrial before hitting the studio and recording what came out. Same for Gojira, who made a point of taking their time on their highly anticipated new album. The same could be said for Evanescence, Rob Zombie, Social Distortion, Mayhem, and Lamb of God — all of whom are expected or scheduled to release an LP this year.
The biggest drop comes early in the calendar year on January 23rd when Megadeth release their final album. A lengthy farewell tour is set to follow, but this is it for the thrash legends as far as studio material — possibly due to the onset of Dave Mustaine’s lingering hand disorder. The singles preceding the LP’s release showcase a band going out on top, while Mustaine can still shred in top form. He’s even bringing it full circle with his own version of “Ride the Lightning,” a song he helped pen as an early member of Metallica.
It is worth noting that the only relative newcomer on our list is the ever-prolific Poppy. Teamed with producer Jordan Fish, her songs are getting heavier and more metalcore, with the forthcoming Empty Hands coming after a string of collaborative singles that have aligned her with some of the biggest names in modern alt-metal, such as Amy Lee and Courtney LaPlante. After surfing genres, exploring pop to electro-industrial, Poppy might have found her scene, especially with Fish behind the board.

Social Distortion — TBA
TBDSocial Distortion’s long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes is expected to finally drop in 2026, according to recent remarks by frontman Mike Ness, and a single is expected in January — the first new music from Social Distortion since Ness was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2023. At the time of his diagnosis, Social Distortion had been working on the new record, and the group has since performed live and toured. Ness says his singing voice is “stronger than it’s ever been” and the songs have been flowing, so all signs point to a 2026 release.
