GWAR have just launched their fall “Return of Gor Gor Tour” as they continue to celebrate their 40th anniversary as a band. Heavy Consequence recently caught up with front-thing Blöthar the Berserker to discuss the tour and much more.
The intergalactic barbarian met us up at Lucky 13 Saloon in Brooklyn, New York, where we asked him what the ride has been like for the past 40 years. “Bumpy, to say the least,” responded Blöthar. “Like a log flume or something. Just constantly plunging and rising, waiting for the next drop. It’s been a blast.”
Blöthar also spoke about the return of the band’s dinosaur mascot Gor-Gor and GWAR’s current North American tour featuring support from Helmet, Dwarves, and Blood Vulture (pick up tickets here).
Additionally, the vocalist addressed the Trump administration’s decision to cut funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, expanding on his recent PSA speaking out against the bill. “As a young man, I watched Ginger Baker have a drum-off with the drummer from RATT on Rockschool on PBS,” recalled Blöthar. “You’re not gonna find that on network television.”
Following the passing of Ozzy Osbourne earlier this summer, Blöthar also discussed the impact Black Sabbath’s music had on him, noting, “[Their music] changed me. The idea of bringing horror movies and the gothic into heavy metal really fascinated me, and that had a lot to do with the themes of GWAR.”
