Lambrini Girls have made it their mission to speak up for the voiceless, and they’re raising the standards of their peers in the process. Composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Phoebe Lunny and bass player Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez, the band — Consequence‘s Rookie of the Year — often rails against the system, The Man, and every iteration of authority possible. Lambrini Girls’ Who Let the Dogs Out debut LP, one of the year’s best albums, teems with attitude, ire, and outrage, as the pair navigates interacting with an unjust world.

In our Rookie of the Year video interview, Macieira-Boşgelmez says she’s inspired in part by the demonstrative actions of international rapper Bad Bunny. “Bad Bunny is one of the mainstream artists that’s bringing politics into his music and he’s utilizing his power as a global star to shine a light on the effects of colonialism and American occupation in Puerto Rico,” Macieira-Boşgelmez says. “I think that’s really powerful and I don’t think there’s that many examples in pop music that do that.”
Who Let the Dogs Out is Lambrini Girls’ attempt to eviscerate the interweaved brawn of patriarchy, capitalism, and colonialism; per Lunny, “the world’s on fire.” But she looks forward to jump-starting a freer future through sheer creativity, and a deliberately healthy amount of intensity. “I would like to piss people off,” Lunny says. “Make ’em question themselves around certain issues that they may be being apathetic about. I want people to mobilize. And for people who are affected by the issues that we sing about in our songs, I’d like to make people feel validated and less alone.”
